Banana

Living in a tropical country means we get sunshine and rain all year long, although weather been really weird for the past three years.

Anyway, today I manage to get some cooking banana which is tasteless when eaten raw, but great snacks after cooked/ roasted/ fried, you name it. According to the mak cik ( aunty) mending the banana stall, Pisang Abu are normally used for pisang goreng ( fried banana, local Malay snacks) since it is naturally sweet. I decided to give Pisang Awak and Pisang Tanduk a try.

This is Pisang Awak, texture is similiar to Pisang Abu, but it is a little sour.

This is Pisang Tanduk. Looks like elephant tusk, and sour in nature.

Comparing both Pisang Awak and Pisang Tanduk.

Mum fried both Pisangs for dinner.

Taste wise, it is good, not too sweet and a good pairing with green tea.

For the remaining bananas, I sliced and threw them into the dehydrator.
This is how it looks like after 16 hours of dehydrating.
Makes good snacks for the human and dog at home.

Teh Pao loves dehydrated banana treats.
Did I mention, the only two fresh banana Teh Pao will eat are Pisang Berangan and Pisang Emas ( both are local village banana).

No, everyone at home loathed Cavendish Banana. Reason being it smells like banana, but tasteless, and have horrible texture compared to local village banana ( Pisang Kampung). I suppose it is just personal preference though.

** Word PISANG means Banana in Malay Language.

  1. That's interesting! I've never had cooked banana like that before, but we've only got the one type here.

    1. I suppose it is Cavendish Banana is widely available in the State? Here we do import Cavendish, catering to expats area.

These cooked banana are very popular among the village folks here, especially those who comes from Malay heritage whereas Chinese or Indians are more into fresh bananas ( back in the 70s' and 80s', cooking banana were popular dishes in most household irregardless of your skin colour & social background).

If you ever have the chance to visit Asia, especially South East Asia, goreng pisang ( fried banana) is a must try, in fact different part of Asia countries uses different type of cooking banana, and they have their unique taste and aroma. ;)
