The Paos' Maintenance: August 2014

This is an ongoing effort to keep track of pet finance.

I was away for the past 2.5 months, took the opportunity to scout for authentic and "exotic"stuffs in hometown ( other towns I passed by).

Food wise, bought 1 KG of freshly grounded tumeric powder from an Indian acquaintance at RM15. He sells home made spices, in small quantity, quality assured. He ground the spices according to orders, and a little extra here and there just in case anyone came by to buy. I was there when he started grounding the dried tumeric, it is all manual work, so yeah, took quite some time, but it is worth the wait.

Down side about these home made ( or in this case, home ground) stuffs, they need to be stored in refrigerator. I'm getting this for Teh Pao, tumeric helps with the itches, so yeah, I'm stocking up a wee bit.

Then I bought some quail eggs and a duck egg from farmer's market for some change instead of the usual chicken eggs. Teh Pao loves quail eggs, so she gets it on special occasion ( ie. when she practices good recalls).

Cow tripe + quail eggs = HEAVENLY!

Other than that, I bought a 1.5KG tub of plain yoghurt, and a tray of Aussie beef from local supermarket. These pretty much summed up the total cost spent for food and treats.

Veterinary and Medical

I bought another 2 boxes of Heartgard Green ( expires Jan 2016) at the price of RM113 instead of the usual RM140 ( RM70 each). It is not ordinary discount but rather a "discount" in exchange for some insignificant paperworks done for the vet. He is a great guy, and I'm happy to render some favour here and there since he too sometimes help out with the costing of the rescues I brought in, but he made it a point that the "discount" I'm getting for preventive medicine is considered a pay so that neither party feels being taken advantage off, so I accepted it.

So we're well stocked for 2015. I'm planning to stock up Heartgard for the following year before the implementation of GST ( which, obviously, will force our wallet and bank balance to go on further diet).

Food and Treats

Didn't buy much for last month, only a chicken, some fishes and carrots. Been clearing off those beef parts I stocked up back in July. However, since I traveled out of town, so I have to buy this 12lb bag of Merrick Grain Free Pork and Sweet Potato at price of RM143, taking the bulk of the entire food expenses for last month.

70% Meat + Fish Ingredients and 30% Fresh Produce.. or so they claimed.

We also have some frozen salmon skin and flakes left from one of my salmon purchases ( for human at home), so Teh Pao got some of these leftover salmon flakes as dinner.

Veterinary and Medical

Teh Pao's allergy flared up in the beginning of rainy season and things went pretty much out of control since she was left outdoor ( I wasn't home to keep her in). Gave the vet a ring for prescription and picked it up on my way home from hometown.

 

We're experiencing hot and humid morning/ afternoon but wet and chilly night everyday right now due to monsoon season. Teh Pao being the daredevil at home had always been vary of wet season, so I'm trying to make some adjustment to our lifestyle by taking her out for walk in the morning before I left home, or try to make it home earlier in the afternoon and take her out before the rain comes.

Poor Teh Pao is not afraid of the sound of thunder or sight of lightning, but the sound of rain/ water dripping on our roof!

Diet wise, I try to maintain raw feeding as our primary meals, but on chilly nights like this, I'm also resorting to home cooked, especially chicken stew, which is one of Teh Pao's favorite.

Cone day

Hot and humid weather is and always is the perfect breeding ground for strange creature. Maybe that's why Teh Pao's allergy flare up again.

This girl was alright yesterday, up to last night before going to bed, she wasn't scratching nor licking her paws. This afternoon, I came home to a bald, bloody patch of chest, which I think must be painful because THIS GIRL HERE refused to lie on my lap ( her favorite throne). She sure did a round of damage to herself while I was in class, paws are all red too.

Cleaned her chest and paws with diluted apple cider and later applied some Tri-Derm Cream given by her vet couple of months ago for the same problem. On the safe side, I put Teh Pao in her cone ( which she has no issue wearing it, even tried to show off that seasonal outfit that matched her coat) just in case. I'm not using any Pred this time round, although I still have enough dosage to last for 2 days ( and yes, usually 2 days is all it takes to bring everything down). I'll see how it goes... 

** As for the broken tooth wise, we went for a couple more visits in different veterinary practice within the same or nearby area. All of them suggested to wait and see how things go, if the fractured tooth is dying or shows any sign of infection, or causing pain or discomfort ( lucky it is not, at least not yet), then the only solution offered is to remove it =( I'm still searching for a specialized veterinary dentistry to have a more professional look at it, hoping that the tooth can be saved.
